Google Preferred Sources button generator

Enter your domain and get the official code letting your readers add you to their preferred sources in Google Search.

No https:// and no path. Only domains and subdomains are eligible, not subdirectories.
Two-letter language code. Leave empty to let Google pick based on the user.
Adds preferred-sources-control="manual" to the script: Google no longer renders the button automatically, you initialise it from your own code.
Free, unlimited, no account

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type here reaches our servers, nothing is stored, there is no account to create and no quota to respect. We can give it away because it costs us nothing to run.

What this tool does

Preferred Sources lets a Google Search user name the sites they want to see more often in news results. Google provides an official button you can embed so your readers can add you in one click. The code is not complicated, but it gets copied wrong: this tool outputs the exact block for your domain, with your options.

  • Outputs the official publisher.js script for the head, loaded asynchronously.
  • Outputs the button element carrying the google-add-preferred-source-btn attribute and your options.
  • Handles light or dark styling through data-theme, and display language through data-lang.
  • Offers the manual mode (preferred-sources-control) to wire the flow to your own design.
  • Also gives the direct link to the preference page, handy in a newsletter or on social.
Before you embed the button

Google restricts Preferred Sources to domains and subdomains: https://example.com or https://news.example.com work, https://example.com/blog is not eligible. The feature applies to news surfaces in Google Search. If your site does not appear on the preference page, the button will render without doing anything useful.

Frequently asked questions

What does Preferred Sources actually change?
When a user adds you to their preferred sources, your articles surface more often in the news blocks of their Google results. It does not change your ranking for anyone else: this is personalisation, not a general position lever.
Does the button work on any site?
The code embeds anywhere, but the effect assumes Google recognises your site as an eligible news source. Subdirectories are not eligible: only domains and subdomains are.
Where exactly does the script go?
In the head, asynchronously. The button element goes in the body, wherever you want it to appear: end of article and footer are the two most effective spots, once the reader has shown interest.
What is manual mode for?
It stops Google rendering its own button so you can trigger the flow from your own interface, for instance a link in your menu or an in-house banner. You keep design control at the cost of a few extra lines of JavaScript.
Can I just use the direct link?
Yes. The link to the Google preference page for your domain works with no script at all and drops in anywhere, including an email. The official button simply offers a shorter path and better visual recognition.
